7. 항상 복수로 쓰는 명사

두 개의 부분이 모여 하나의 사물을 이루는 명사는 항상 복수로 사용합니다.

scissors(가위), pants(바지), shorts(반바지), jeans(청바지), glasses(안경)

• Can you hand me the scissors, please?
• These pants are too tight for me.
• He wore shorts to the beach.
• I just bought a new pair of jeans.
• She needs her glasses to read the book.

8. 단수로 쓸 것 같지만 복수로 쓰는 명사

단수로 쓸 것 같지만 복수 명사로 사용합니다.

belongings(소지품), goods(상품), congratulations(축하), clothes(옷)

• Please take all your belongings before leaving the room.
• The store is offering a discount on all goods this week.
• Give me my congratulations!
• I need to pack my clothes for the trip.

9. 복수로 쓸 것 같지만 단수로 쓰는 명사

여러 구성원들이 모인 집단을 뜻하지만 주로 단수로 사용됩니다.

family(가족), class(학급, 반), team(팀), staff(직원), audience(청중)

• My family is coming to visit this weekend.
• The class starts at 9 a.m.
• Our team won the match yesterday.
• The staff is very friendly at this restaurant.
• The audience clapped loudly after the performance.

예외

police(경찰)은 복수명사로 사용되며, 경찰관 한 명을 말할 때는 a police officer를 사용합니다.

• The police are investigating the case.
• I spoke to a police officer about the accident.
